Here are some illustrations I did for a Fred Richards article in AdWeek. I worked from Fred’s sketches and some of my own, then illustrated them in the IB style in adobe illustrator .. no photoshop!…. It’s cool that this is my job … I sketch all the time, just moving pens around paper at various times … I used to get in trouble for drawing during class instead of my work … terrible grades …
which makes me wonder … I was watching a show about moguls of hollywood on TCM last night. The leaders of those major studios were not highly educated, 6th grade education for one, drop outs for others, there are still many things you can’t learn from a book, or professor. Its a dog eat dog world. To be pack leader you have to assert your dominance. I was never one to do that. I think I may be smarter than you average bear, but I lack the constant vigilance to be a pack leader. The fortitude to dig in and bite the neck of the rest of the pack every hour and every minute of every day … the people I know who are successful at it have that drive … or an obsession with power. Even in school men align themselves to a pecking order, you can challenge it but there is always a newer younger dog being born waiting for his chance to take you out … that is the shit part about getting old, after a while you are just like fuck it, you want to do it? go for it… then you are put out to pasture with the other old bulls … eating grass and dreaming of the glory days. Some dogs never get the chance to be pack leader, they always wish they could.. That is why men engage in family making, because among your family, you are usually the biggest, even if you can’t dominate your world, you can dominate a baby. For a while you get to teach them and say I am smarter than you baby! But eventually they grow up and become a smarter younger version of you. and once again you are battling for dominance.
Some people don’t get that at home so they bring it to work, others get it at home and leave work to someone else, then still others never get it and become bitter and old then die of heart attacks. This in a nut shell is the essence of being a man. So women be thankful, you are cherished either way …

The evil looking art subject is pretty common and strong. There are leagions of artists who draw dragons and fairies and other pagan themes. I often wonder why this style is so popular among illustrator types. I have been to student shows and know illustrators and the bulk of them get into this type of art. Parallels can be drawn between the Guitarist and the artist…
The more a guitarist is into the craft of playing they tend to lean towards metal and mystical styles. Punk rock was not so much about technique but connecting with peoples everyday crappy life. Where as metal was about leaving this crappy world behind and traveling to a place that was way cooler. Pink Floyd takes us to a distopia where people love misery and strive to achieve freedom through anarchy (we are all just a brick in the wall). Led Zepplin “the battle of evermore” and Queen of light took her bow… Early Led Zep was very sexualized. Which leads to another form of graphic design the “Pin Up”.
So basic themes are:
- Escapism
- Sexuality
- Distopia – the opposite of utopia – Blues etc.
- Melancholy is a sub catagory
Very little time is devoted to Happy Art…
I was hoping to make music of only happy fun songs without being corny but that might not be something people are interested in at this time, but maybe soon…..
I was reading a post on CL about a group of Moms who want to create a social group for parents who pose the question “Are you raising your children to be who they are and not what society wants them to be?”
As a parent I have never received an email from “society” or any letters… There are no meeting groups or organizations for “society”. What exactly does this mean? What would you tell an alien who just came to this planet??

my kids still like to eat with thier hands no matter how much society frowns on them, but I would rather send them to finishing school than encourage them to be pigs.
We are all basically wild animals when we are born. pooping on the floor and walking around on all fours. The whole point of humans is we are better behaved than monkies… at least some of us. So why in Gods name would you create a group around that?
Children are afraid alot of the time, especially in a house hold where things are changing. They are afraid of divorce and bears and monsters and things they don’t understand. It is our job to give them a worm safe place out of the cold harsh reality of life, where people kill each other and make chili out of them. Mayhem and anarchy are really not well understood these days.
If you really believe in anarchy you should expect your car to be stolen and your house burnt down. I have had the former happen. It is quite the rude awakening when some teenagers steal your car to go joy riding and you have to take the bus to work to your shitty seven dollar an hour job so you can make rent in your two hundred and fifty dollar apartment in the ghetto.
Anarchy loses its charm real fast…. it seemed all cool and dangerous in high school though when I got to go home after wards to our house in the suburbs
