I worked at NCE like ten yrs ago, and people would come to the art department and request big cards, for everyone to sign. so we would make a 11 x 17 inch card and pass it around the company. I knew Sandi and said hi to her everyday, then she got sick, so I was tasked with making this card, So I wrote up this little poem, and drew these flowers. She ended up having brain cancer, and eventually lost the battle. at the funeral, her husband thanked me profusely, saying sandi loved the card and kept it with her until she past.

I always felt like I did something good with that card,

this movie is pretty good, it shows the rock bottom of drug dependancy… i got it from the library near my house. the library is awsome… free movies, books, music, the selection can be pretty thin but sometimes you hit paydirt thanks to a movie loving library employee… I have known a few library employees over the years they are a special breed, they spend alot of time reading and watching movies and listening to music. they are not aware of how much they read compared to most of the public and they unconciously form a seperate sub group of society. I know of one fellow who is generally happy who has worked at the library for his entire adult life… he walks everywhere because you don’t get alot of money from the library, he also has an encyclopaedic knowlage of my family, he worked with my brother and sister who both passed through the library in thier working life. he also knows a couple other of my siblings, and remembers me. I can’t remember his name, I am good at faces and shapes but not letters so names are often forgotten by me. this is extremely embaresing and a source of my social awkwardness, but that is another story. The happy state of this fellow is intreging. most people have alot of matierial things but never appear as happy as this guy. he has found his utopia and live there everyday. I could be missing something maybe he is sad at nights or on weekends, but for the times I talk to he he never seems agitated. I am agitatted around 50% of the time and always want to get that number up, but never seem to get there…
anyway, go to your local library and watch trainspotting, it is sad and also scary but you might feel like your life isn’t so shitty after watching it… thanks for reading… cya!

here is a still life I found on the internet, I don’t even know where. But if you went to Central Academy of Commercial Art in Walnut Hills, Cincinnati Ohio this guy is kinda famous. He started the school and many productive commercial artists came out of his program. Not fine artists but commercial artists. The CA CA program was an intense training in any field of commercial art, It was all studio time, no classes, just 40 hours a week of working in an art studio. Hand lettering – gothic caligraphy, spencerian script, uh expressive lettering, all done by hand with pencil and brush. Super tight pencil renderings of every shape known to man.
Ink drawings,  Guache painting – still life, architectural renderings from blue prints, mechanical paintings and line art, perspective,  Figure drawing from a live model every thurs,  the second year was marker renderings and ad concepts. We created many campaigns and presented them to the class. from a variety of products. It was a very well rounded program the funny thing is many old timers I run into who are still in this business went there making a living doing the same stuff.
I guess it was never put to us graduates that art was something else, like a political statement or a highly idealized statement of individuality. I always suspected those things growing up, but never have had anyone validate those ideas. So to me art is not about me, it is about creating something people might want, so I try hard to make things people might find interesting. Knowing people really aren’t interested in my personal feelings expressed as color. Nothing is worse than a self indulgent artist thinking he is interesting and talking about his art as being awesome. If your art is really good people should tell you about it. not the other way around.
if you aren’t getting that feed back you should reassess your process.
When I make music on  guitar it is really easy to be self indulgent. But most music isn’t interesting notes and complex ideas. the really good stuff is just plain fun. Classical music is really technical and excellent, but it can be really dull. Now is that art? or is it something else?
is “louie louie” art?  what is the point? what is the point of this blog?
see oliver reads my blog, and I think people might be reading this stupid thing and I start to ramble… boring!!!
I apoligize…

Over the next few days I am going to post a new vintage candybar wrapper!

These are all privately owned companys. Back in the days before the giant global candy conglometrates candy bars were a local creation made by a small candy shop. Alot of them still exist, but they are not available at walmart.

The fun part of that is the names are just made up on the spot without a focus group or high level marketing strategies. So you get alot of creative product names. Creative simple names like “Big Shot” vs Reese’s Peanut butter and Banana Creme “Elvis” Edition. Instead of trying to cash in on the market trends of “Elvis” and Special edition, they just made a candy bar and sent it out.

The landscape of America has become so homogenized you could be standing in the middle of a walmart in rural Pennsylvania at 3 am or one at 4:15 in the afternoon in las vegas and not know it. BORING!!!!!!! Way to suck the fun out of life large corporations!

Big Shot
