The French who seem to be sooo chastised for their non fighting ways these days are very misunderstood. They lost a lot of fighting men in ww1.
“World War I cost France 1,357,800 dead, 4,266,000 wounded (of whom 1.5 million were permanently maimed) and 537,000 made prisoner or missing — exactly 73% of the 8,410,000 men mobilized, according to William Shirer in The Collapse of the Third Republic. Some context: France had 40 million citizens at the start of the war; six in ten men between the ages of eighteen and twenty-eight died or were permanently maimed.”
Does anyone remember that one? they also lost a lot of fighting men under Napoleon.
- 371,000 killed in action
- 800,000 killed by disease, primarily in the disastrous invasion of Russia
- 600,000 civilians
- 65,000 French allies (mainly Poles fighting for independence lost in 1795)
- Total: 1,800,000 French and allies (mostly Germans and Poles) dead in action, disease and missing
I imagine all the genetically predisposed fighting men of France have been killed and all that is left are the ones who were smart enough or scared enough to duck and get out of the way,
